Northwestern University: Assistant/Associate Professor: Mechanics for Extreme Conditions

Posted 23 Oct 2026

Northwestern's Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at Assistant or Associate Professor level in mechanics and materials under extreme conditions. These include extreme temperature, pressure, and mechanical loading or impact. Areas include composites and structures, surface science, reacting and multiphase flows, advanced manufacturing and energy systems for space and other extreme environments. It suits mechanical or aerospace engineers using experimental, theoretical or computational methods.

What you'll do

  • Develop research on mechanics and materials in extreme temperature, pressure and loading environments
  • Use methods such as quantum and exascale computing, high-throughput automated experiments and multiscale, multiphysics analysis
  • Work in areas such as composites, interfacial science, high-Reynolds-number reacting flows and advanced manufacturing
  • Teach and take part in departmental activities
  • Present research plans in a cover letter that explains qualifications in the target areas

Who can apply

  • An earned PhD, or near completion of doctoral studies, in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related fields
  • Demonstrated research potential
  • Three to five references are required
  • The page says H-1B sponsorship may be available for qualified candidates, subject to policy

How to apply

Upload a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement and names and contacts of three to five references via the web interface at the apply link. Applications are accepted until the position is filled, and full consideration requires all materials, including reference letters, by November 30, 2026.
