University of Sydney: Postdoc in Computational Supersonic Combustion

Posted 25 Oct 2026

This is a postdoctoral research role in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) at the University of Sydney. It sits within the ARC Training Centre for High-Speed Propulsion, Rocket and Launch Systems (HiPR-LS). The work is computational research on supersonic combustion and compressible reacting flows for advanced propulsion. The post is a two-year fixed term with possible extension, starting in January or February 2027, and suits a mechanical or aerospace PhD with CFD and combustion experience.

What you'll do

  • Carry out research on supersonic combustion and compressible reacting flows
  • Help develop new computational models and solvers for supersonic combustion and compressible mixing, with relevance to advanced propulsion concepts
  • Run computational studies with existing and new codes on high-performance computing
  • Work with direct numerical simulation, large eddy simulation and probability density function methods
  • Mentor research students in the HiPR-LS centre
  • Develop technical content for the HiPR-LS professional development program in rocket systems, including short courses, seminars and example problems

Who can apply

  • A completed PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated research experience in combustion, compressible or high-speed fluid dynamics, supersonic or reacting flows, CFD and modelling
  • Experience with sophisticated CFD solvers, especially direct numerical simulation, laser diagnostics and probability density function approaches
  • Experience developing code and setting up complex numerical simulations
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment with academics, research students and industry partners, and to teach and present technical educational content
  • Unrestricted work rights in Australia for the whole period of employment are required, and visa sponsorship is not available
