Chalmers: Postdoc in Railway Mechanics

Posted 23 Oct 2026

This is a two-year postdoc in the Division of Dynamics, Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers. It sits inside CHARMEC, the national centre of excellence in railway mechanics. The project looks at hybrid asset management for railways, combining physical simulation with data-driven (AI/ML and statistical) analysis of monitoring data. It suits a mechanical engineer with research experience in predicting mechanical deterioration.

What you'll do

  • Carry out research on predictive asset management for railways, linking collected data to the current condition, future deterioration and operational safety of track and vehicles
  • Combine physical simulations with data-driven analyses, including AI/ML and conventional statistics, using data from several sources
  • Build algorithms and methods to assess the key cost-driving deterioration phenomena in the railway sector
  • Publish in international journals and present at conferences and seminars
  • Supervise master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent
  • Teach at undergraduate or master's level if you wish

Who can apply

  • A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or similar, or an equivalent foreign degree, which must be met by the time the employment decision is made
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Meritorious: a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years before the deadline
  • Meritorious: research experience in railway mechanics and in extracting and interpreting data from maintenance and condition-monitoring databases
  • Meritorious: knowledge of Swedish. A valid residence permit must be shown by the start date, and the post requires physical presence throughout

How to apply

Apply through the online form linked from the vacancy page, in English, as PDF files. Send a comprehensive CV with a full publication list and degrees plus details of teaching experience, and a personal letter covering your background, key results and future research goals. Email applications are not considered, and reference contacts are asked for after interviews.
