ETH Zurich: Postdoc: Experimental Fracture Mechanics of Soft Materials

Posted 23 Oct 2026

The Professorship of Solid Mechanics (SMEC) in the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich is hiring a postdoc with a strong experimental background. The work is on how soft and architected materials fracture, using advanced imaging near the crack tip. The group studies how materials deform, degrade and fail. The post is a 100% fixed-term position with a flexible start date, ideally as soon as possible.

What you'll do

  • Lead experiments on the fracture mechanics of soft and architected materials, using confocal and high-speed imaging to study crack-tip behaviour
  • Apply digital image correlation, particle tracking and similar methods to measure displacement and strain fields, crack-tip deformation, fracture energy and rate-dependent behaviour
  • Develop optical methods to characterise contact, deformation and friction in soft and architected materials
  • Work with colleagues in numerical modelling, theory and soft materials
  • Help supervise PhD and master's students in the group

Who can apply

  • A doctorate in mechanics, civil, mechanical, aerospace or bio-engineering, materials science, physics or a related field
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical testing, experimental design, instrumentation and quantitative measurement of deformation and fracture
  • Experience with digital image correlation, particle tracking, high-speed imaging or optical microscopy is highly desirable
  • Ability to develop and validate experimental methods independently, mentor students and communicate in English
  • A commitment to open and reproducible research

How to apply

Apply only through ETH's online application portal; email or postal applications are not considered. Upload your CV, a list of publications, a short statement of research interests and how they relate to the post, and the names and contacts of two references. Questions go to Prof. David Kammer (dkammer@ethz.ch), not applications.
